If you are an iPhone user or someone who troubleshooted iOS devices, you’ve probably encountered the term DFU mode at some point. But what exactly is DFU mode, and why is it essential to know about it?

Wondering what is DFU mode? This article discusses DFU mode, its purpose and the steps to enter DFU mode on various iOS devices.

What is DFU mode?

DFU, which stands for Device Firmware Update, is a special mode on iOS devices that allows you to interface with the firmware and operating system at a very low level. This is different from recovery mode, often used for restoring your device to factory settings or installing a new version of iOS. DFU mode, on the other hand, lets you perform more advanced operations like downgrading your iOS version, jailbreaking, and fixing critical issues that can’t be resolved through regular means.

When should you use DFU mode?

Here are some common scenarios where it can be incredibly helpful:

  • Software Troubleshooting: When your iPhone is stuck in a boot loop, unresponsive, or experiencing severe software issues, DFU mode can help you restore it to a working state.
  • Downgrading iOS: If you’ve updated to a new iOS version and want to revert to the previous one, DFU mode allows you to install an older firmware version.
  • Custom Firmware: Advanced users may utilise DFU mode to load custom firmware onto their devices, which can offer more control and flexibility.
  • Unlocking: In some cases, DFU mode can be used to unlock a locked iPhone, although this should be approached with caution and is not recommended for most users.

How do I enter DFU mode?

Here are the steps to enter DFU mode on various iOS devices:

For iPad, iPhone 6s and earlier, iPhone SE, and iPod touch

  • Connect your device to a desktop using a USB cable.
  • Press and hold both the Home button and the Lock button (the one on the top or side) together.
  • After 8 seconds, release the Lock button while still holding the Home button.
  • If you see the Apple logo, the Lock button was held for too long. In DFU mode, the screen remains blank. iTunes will alert you if it detects a device in recovery mode.
