Dutch smartphone manufacturer Fairphone unveils its latest offering, the Fairphone 5, continuing its commitment to ethical sourcing and repairability. The device will be released on September 14th in Europe at €699 in the Eurozone or £619 in the United Kingdom.

There are no plans for the company to release the phone in the United States and other world regions. Only recently, the Fairphone 4 was launched in the US at $599.

Fairphone 5 will sport a Dynamic OLED display, measuring 6.46 inches with a 90Hz refresh rate and 1224 x 2770 resolution. It also houses a dual 50-megapixel rear camera and a 50-megapixel selfie camera within a hole-punch cutout. The phone allows a 4K video resolution with a slow motion of up to 240 frames per second.

Fairphone emphasises lies in sustainability and repairability. Boasting 10 repair modules, the Fairphone 5 facilitates individual replacements of rear cameras and SIM/SD card slots, aiming to extend the device’s lifespan and curb electronic waste.

The device also has a 4,200mAh user-replaceable battery supporting 30W charging and surviving up to 1,000 charging cycles. The Fairphone 5’s software is equally impressive, promising at least five major Android updates beyond Android 13 and up to eight years of security patches, potentially extending usability until 2031 and a few years more.

As with the earlier Fariphones, the Fairphone 5 also supports de-googled applications and an alternative OS — Murena OS — a de-googled fork of Android.

Under the hood, the Fairphone 5 houses an enterprise-focused Qualcomm chipset, the QCM6490, accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable internal storage, providing a competent performance for its price range.

Fairphone 5 will come in three colours — matte black, sky blue and transparent — with the back cover made from 100% recycled plastic.

“With Fairphone 5, we continue to push the boundaries we pushed in the previous generations of Fairphones, showing the electronics industry what is possible. This time, we worked with Qualcomm Technologies to take the next step in our commitment to longevity by adopting an industrial-grade chipset for the consumer market. We’re excited to be working with them to provide longer software support. This and our unique five-year warranty will mean our users can be secure that we will keep their device going for as long as possible,” said Miquel Ballester, design lead at Fairphone.
