Google has unveiled a series of updates to enhance the travel planning experience for users of Google Maps and Search. These updates range from new and customizable AI-powered features to customisable lists and better recommendations.
New features in Google Maps
Of the primary updates is the addition of curated lists of recommendations from top websites and the Google Maps community. After this update, users can easily discover these lists when searching for specific cities in Maps, offering a wealth of insights from people familiar with the area.
Notable lists include expert-curated restaurant recommendations from The Infatuation, guides to iconic sites from Lovely Planet and 36 Hours itineraries from The New York Times.

Now, these lists will be categorised into three main sections: Trending, Top and Gem. Google Maps plans to expand these curated lists to more than 40 cities in the United States and Canada soon. Additionally, the platform will highlight community-generated lists, encouraging users to share their curated recommendations and insights from fellow travellers.

Furthermore, Google has introduced advanced customisation tools allowing users to manage these lists. Users can tap on the ‘New list’ button and add places. Moreover, users can organise the list chronologically like an itinerary.
Google has also added a functionality where users can link content from various social media platforms including reviews of food and places.
The integration of AI-powered insights adds another layer of convenience to Google Maps. Users can now gain a quick understanding of a place’s highlights, thanks to Google’s AI identifying key insights from the Maps community.
New features in Search
In Google Search, users can now generate customised trip ideas by asking for recommendations based on their preferences. By opting into the Search Generative Experience (SGE), users can receive tailored trip suggestions by simply asking questions like “Plan me a 3-day trip to Philadelphia that’s all about history.”

This feature amalgamates data from various sources, including user reviews, photos, and Business Profile details, to create comprehensive itineraries. Users can also export these ideas to Gmail, Docs, or Maps for further collaboration and refinement.
For travellers navigating language barriers, Google introduces Circle to Search for instant on-screen translations on select Android devices. This feature eliminates the need to switch between apps, enhancing user convenience.

Additionally, Google Lens offers real-time translation of physical text, such as street signs or menus, ensuring seamless communication in unfamiliar environments.

The third update that Google did is to enhance the AI-powered multisearch capabilities. Users can point their cameras, ask questions about what they see, and receive comprehensive insights and information. This feature transforms smartphones into personal tour guides, providing valuable context and learning opportunities during travel.
