Social media platforms are continually evolving to meet the ever-changing preferences of users. This feature was launched in August 2020, allowing users to create short, engaging videos set to music or other audio clips. However, one common question among users is, how long can Instagram reels be?

How long can Instagram Reels be?

Users can generally create Reels that last up to 90 seconds. However, older videos, originally shorter than 15 minutes, have been converted into Reels, exceeding the usual 90-second limit. It’s important to note that currently, users are restricted from creating Reels longer than 90 seconds.

If you upload a video longer than 90 seconds but shorter than 15 minutes, it will be shared as Reels. But remember that while you do have the option to upload videos that exceed the typical 90-second duration, you won’t have access to the same editing tools as Reels.

The ideal length for your Reels

The ideal length for your Instagram Reel depends on what you want to achieve. If you aim to grab potential customers’ attention or share a story, the length matters.

  • Capture attention (3-7 seconds): Keep it short and lively. Reels that aim to catch attention are typically around 3 seconds. Ensure your content is simple and energetic to prevent viewers from getting bored and swiping to the next Reel.
  • Increase views (3-10 seconds): You have more room here. Consider tricks like a surprising ending or text overlay on a fast-paced video to make people watch your Reel multiple times. Engaging content is key to holding their interest.
  • More comments or shares (15-30 seconds): The first 3-5 seconds are crucial for hooking your audience. Use clickbait titles, ask intriguing questions, or drop something wild and unexpected. The main goal is to keep their attention until the end, where you present your call to action.
  • Build a connection (60-90 seconds): This is the range to aim for if you’re telling a story. Stories are powerful, and they help build authentic connections with your audience. You can go for shorter videos if you can tell the whole story in less time, but avoid making it too long and risking boredom.
