Instagram launched Reels in India when their main rival, TikTok, was banned last year. Reels lets you film, edit and post 15-second videos on Instagram, which works in a manner very similar to TikTok.
In this article, we’re taking a look at how you can upload a reel on Instagram. There are two ways users can do this.
- Creating a Reel using the Instagram app and posting it right away.
- Uploading a reel from your camera roll.

How to create and upload a reel on Instagram?
This works exactly the way you’d post stories on Instagram. Follow these steps.
- Open the Instagram app and swipe right to open the Instagram app.
- Tap on Reels and press the centre button to record.
- When you’re done recording, tap the Done button at the bottom right.
- Tap the right arrow next to the record button.
- Trim the video and add any text or stickers if needed and tap the arrow again.
- Write out your caption and add other details as you’d want. Tap on the Next button to proceed.
- You’ll be shown some information about how your reels are shared. Tap on the Share button to upload your reel.

How to upload a reel to Instagram from your camera roll?
This way you can upload any video from your camera roll to reels for as long as it is under 15 seconds. If the video is longer, you can trim it down to 15 seconds.
- Open the Instagram app and swipe right to open the Instagram app.
- Tap on Reels.
- Tap on the gallery icon in the bottom right.
- Find the video you want to upload and tap it to proceed. You can also select an image if you want.
- Finalise the length of the reel and tap Add in the top right corner.
- Tap the right arrow next to the record button.
- Trim the video and add any text or stickers if needed and tap the arrow again.
- Write out your caption and add other details as you’d want. Tap on the Next button to proceed.
- You’ll be shown some information about how your reels are shared. Tap on the Share button to upload the Instagram reel.
