Your voter ID card is crucial for exercising your right to vote and serves as valid identity proof in various official procedures. However, if you need to change your name on your voter ID card due to marriage, legal reasons, or any other circumstance, the process might seem daunting. Fortunately, with the advancement of technology, many administrative tasks, including updating your voter ID details, can now be done online.

Documents required for name change in Voter ID
When applying to change the name on your Voter ID card, you must provide a document as proof of the name change. Here is the list of documents you can choose from to submit for changing your name on your Voter ID:
- Aadhaar card
- PAN card
- Passport
- Birth certificate
- Driving license
- Current passbook of bank or post office
- Utility bills not older than a year, such as water, electricity or gas bill

How to change the name in Voter ID card online?
- Step 1: Visit the National Voter Services Portal (NVSP) Website.
- Step 2: Click on Login if you already have an account. Otherwise, click on the Sign up button and register yourself using your mobile number.

- Step 3: Click on the Fill Form 8 button in Shifting of residence/correction of entries in existing electoral roll/replacement of EPIC/marking of PwD box available under Forms section.

- Step 4:Â Select the Self option and click Submit button.Â
- Step 5:Â Next, select the Correction of Entries in Existing Electoral Roll option and click on the OK button.
- Step 6: The State, District and Assembly/Parliamentary Constituency to which you belong will be auto-filled. Check the details and click on the Next button.
- Step 7:Â Provide your Aadhaar, email, and mobile number and click the Next button.Â
- Step 8:Â Select the detail that requires corrections or changes. In this case, click on the Name tab. Enter the name and the supporting documents required for the name change, upload the supporting document, and click on the Next button.
- Step 9:Â Fill in the declaration, enter the captcha code, and click the Submit button.Â
After completing the steps mentioned above, the Election Commission of India (ECI) will review your request. Once approved, they will update your Voter ID card with the necessary changes.

How to check the Voter ID name change status?
After sending the application for the name change, you can also check the status of your application by following these steps:
- Step 1: Visit the National Voter Services Portal (NVSP) Website and log in with your account.
- Step 2: Click on the Track Application Status box under the Services section.

- Step 3: Enter the reference number, select the State and click on the Submit button.

It will show you the progress status of your request application.
