Know your Keyboard
There are two main types of mechanical keyboards: hot-swappable and soldered. Hot-swappable keyboards are designed for easy switch customisation. The switches simply pop in and out of sockets on the circuit board (PCB). Soldered keyboards, on the other hand, require soldering tools and skills to remove the old switches and install new ones. This guide will focus on the simpler method: hot-swappable keyboards.
What you’ll need?
Here are the things that you need before you try to change the switches of your keyboard:
- Replacement switches: Choose switches compatible with your keyboard. Popular options include Cherry MX, Gateron, and Kailh.
- Switch puller: This handy tool helps remove keycaps without damaging them.
- Keycap organiser (optional): Keeps track of removed keycaps, especially if you plan to reuse them.
Changing switches of your Keyboard
Follow the steps below to change the switches from your keyboard:
Step 1: Power down and disconnect: For safety, always unplug your keyboard before making any modifications.
Step 2: Use the keycap puller: Gently hook the tool around the base of the keycap and pull upwards. Don’t pry on the sides, as this can damage the keycap.
Step 3: Organise the keycaps: If you plan to reuse them, place them in a keycap organiser according to their position on the keyboard.
Step 4 Extract the old switches: With the keycaps removed, you’ll see the exposed switch sockets. Use the switch puller to grip the top and bottom of the switch housing and gently pull it upwards. The switch should pop out of its socket. Repeat for all the switches you want to replace.
Step 5: Insert the new switches: Line up the pins on the new switch with the corresponding holes in the socket. Gently press the switch down until it clicks into place. Make sure the switch sits flush with the keyboard plate.
Step 6: Reassemble and test: Put the keycaps back on their corresponding switches. Plug your keyboard back in and test each key to ensure they register properly. You can use a free online keyboard tester to verify all the switches are functioning.
Changing switches on your keyboard can significantly enhance your typing or gaming experience. Whether you’re using a hot-swappable or soldered keyboard, the process requires some basic tools and a bit of patience. By following this guide, you can customise your keyboard to perfectly suit your needs.
