Excel is by far one of the oldest and most well-known spreadsheet management programs on the planet. It’s been around forever, and whether or not you use it, you’ll know what it is exactly.
However, for those who use Excel frequently, comparing data between spreadsheet rows and columns is crucial, especially in larger spreadsheets. In this article, we’re taking a look at how to freeze rows or columns in spreadsheets.

Freezing rows and coloumns in Excel
Freezing any number of panes in Excel is rather easy. To freeze a given row or column, you need to select a cell either to the right of the column or under the row you want and press the Freeze Panes button. Here’s how.
Step 1: Open your spreadsheet and select the cell to the right of the required column, and below the row,
Step 2: Head over to the View tab, click on Freeze Panes followed by Freeze Panes.
You’ll notice there are two more options there for your convenience.
- Freeze Top Row: Freezes the top row of the spreadsheet regardless of selection.
- Freeze First Coloumn: Freezes the first coloumn of the spreadsheet regardless of selection.
You can quickly use these settings to freeze the columns to save time scrolling through large spreadsheets. Once a row or column has been frozen, you’ll see a thin black line indicating the separation between frozen and unfrozen rows and columns.
Unfreezing columns is even simpler than you might think. All you have to do is head over to the View tab, click Freeze Panes and then click Unfreeze Panes, and all locked panes will be unlocked. You can now scroll your document as usual.
