OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Pro, a premium subscription service designed for users tackling some of the most intricate and high-stakes challenges in fields like science, engineering, and programming. At $200 per month, the plan offers access to OpenAI o1, o1-mini, GPT-40, and the newly unveiled 01 Pro mode.

The introduction of ChatGPT Pro is aimed at professionals who depend on advanced AI capabilities for their work. This includes researchers, engineers, and individuals working in highly specialised fields.

The tool has been tested, and it outperformed previous models in domains such as mathematics, programming, and scientific analysis.

In mathematical challenges, it demonstrated a pass@1 accuracy of 86%, while in programming tasks, it ranked in the 90th percentile. Its capability to handle PhD-level science questions has also improved, achieving a success rate of 79%.

“ChatGPT Pro provides access to a version of our most intelligent model that thinks longer for the most reliable responses. In evaluations from external expert testers, o1 pro mode produces more reliably accurate and comprehensive responses, especially in areas like data science, programming, and case law analysis,” the company wrote.

The user experience for ChatGPT Pro has been designed to accommodate the increased computational effort of the 01 Pro mode. Responses take longer due to the model’s deeper analysis, and users are provided with a progress bar alongside in-app notifications to manage the wait time effectively.

OpenAI is awarding ten ChatGPT Pro grants to leading medical researchers in the United States. These grants aim to accelerate progress in critical areas like ageing, dementia, cancer immunotherapy, and rare disease genetics. Recipients include Dr Catherine Brownstein of Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr Justin Reese of Berkeley Lab, Dr Derya Unutmaz of The Jackson Laboratory and Dr Rhoda Au of Boston University, among others.

The company plans to expand these grants to other regions and research areas in the coming months.

“We’ll be adding capabilities to Pro over time to unlock more compute-intensive tasks. We’ll also continue to bring many of these new capabilities to our other subscribers,” OpenAI confirmed.
