Minecraft is one of the most popular action-adventure sandbox games of all time. The game’s immense popularity has given rise to an entire ecosystem of servers and mods for the players to explore. That said, it isn’t perfect and runs into occasional bugs and errors from time to time.
In this article, we’re taking a look at OpenGL error 1282 in Minecraft, what causes it and how you can fix the problem?
What causes OpenGL error 1282?
This is a rather common error in Minecraft and stems mostly from driver incompatibility where your GPU isn’t able to render specific particles in the game. Other common reasons include
- Outdated drivers.
- Missing DLL files
- Incorrect Minecraft settings.

How to fix this error?
Here are six fixes you can try out.
Update your GPU driver
Outdated GPU drivers can also cause this issue in particular. While you should update all your drivers, take special care of your display drivers if you run into an error like this.
Step 1: Right-click Start and select Device Manager from the menu.
Step 2: Under Display Adaptors, find your graphics card’s name, right-click on it and click on Update Drivers.
Step 3: Click on Search automatically for drivers. Windows will automatically look for and download the latest drivers for your particular GPU.
While this should help resolve the error, in case it doesn’t, click Uninstall device and restart your PC to force Windows to install the required drivers. You can then update them later. Alternatively, you can also remove your GPU and reinsert it if you can.
Install the latest JDK version
Before proceeding, make sure all instances of Minecraft and the Minecraft launcher are closed. Then follow these steps.
Step 1: Head over to Oracle’s JDK download page and download the x64 installer for the latest JDK version (18.0.1.1 at the time of writing). Install the downloaded installer once the download is complete.
Step 2: Open the Minecraft launcher, head over to Minecraft: Java Edition and click the Installations tab.
Step 3: Click the installation you want to fix.
Step 4: Click More options.
Step 5: Click Browse under Java executable and navigate to the folder where you installed Java in step 1.
Step 6: Click Save to save the changes and run the game again.
Now restart the game and it should work just fine.
Update OptiFine
If you’re using OptiFine for Minecraft, an outdated installation can also trigger this error. The best way around this error is to head over to the OptiFine download page and download the latest available version. Now restart your PC before launching the game again and it should work just fine.
Disable Shader and Render Regions
Before proceeding, keep in mind that these settings only apply to Minecraft’s Java edition. If you’re playing Bedrock edition, you can skip this solution.
Step 1: Open Minecraft and click Options.
Step 2: Head over to Shaders.
Step 3: Select Off.
Step 4: Head back to Options and this time click Video Settings…
Step 5: Click Performance.
Step 6: Set Render Regions to Off.
Now restart the game and the error should be gone.
Manually place the OpenGL32.dll file
One of the most popular reasons for this error is the missing OpenGL32.dll file. While updating your GPU driver should fix the problem, in case it doesn’t you can manually download the file from this link and paste it inside at the following file path.
Minecraft\Runtime[version]\bin
Disable the error warning
This isn’t a solution, but if you don’t see any significant issues because of the error, you can just disable it to get it out of the way. Once again, this solution is only available for Minecraft Java Edition players.
Step 1: Open Minecraft and head over to Options.
Step 2: Click Video Settings followed by Others.
Step 3: Set the Show GL Errors setting to Off.
