GTA V is by far one of the most popular GTA games ever made and even after nearly a decade of its launch, it’s still going strong. That said, every game has its flaws and GTA V doesn’t shy away from that.

In this article, we’re talking about the “Script hook V critical error” in GTA V, its causes and what you can do to fix the problem.

What causes this error?

The error is mainly caused by the game’s anti-cheat system which flags any mods or other third-party additions to the game as cheats, causing the error. The Script Hook program is used for modding the game but GTA developers patch any workaround the Script Hook team takes to avoid the scenario, resulting in this error.

How to fix this?

Here are two fixes you can try out.

Update Script Hook

As mentioned before, Script Hook developers keep coming up with new workarounds to resolve the error, meaning updating the program will resolve the error in most cases.

The Script Hook mod allows you to change certain game aspects.

All you have to do is download the latest version of Script Hook from the official website, extract the archive and copy and paste the contents of the bin folder of the archive into the bin folder inside your GTA V installation directory.

Downgrade GTA V

Another possible solution for the error is to downgrade GTA V to a compatible version simply. All you have to do is download the files given below corresponding to the platform you use with GTA V and paste them into the game’s root folder.

These files will downgrade your GTA version to 1.45, which is compatible with Script Hook. Do keep in mind though that you won’t be able to play online or sync your progress with the cloud unless you’re on the latest version.
