Spotify has introduced an AI-powered playlist creation feature in beta, allowing users to generate playlists based on written prompts. The feature is available on Android and iOS devices in the United Kingdom and Australia.
This development comes as Spotify invests in AI technology to enhance its streaming services. In August 2023, Spotify expanded its AI DJ feature globally after introducing it in the United States in February 2023.
These prompts can be as diverse and random as ‘high-intensity workout songs’ to ‘curate playlist for dogs.’ Users can further issue commands to refine their playlists, such as requesting ‘less upbeat’ and ‘more pop or rap’ songs.
The technology behind this feature relies on large language models (LLMs) to understand user intent and Spotify’s personalisation algorithms to curate playlists based on individual listening history and preferences.
Spotify’s AI playlists feature can be accessed through the ‘Your Library’ tab on the app, where users can tap the plus button and select the AI Playlist option. The company provides an in-built selection of prompts for users who need inspiration, covering a wide range of moods, genres, and activities.

Notably, the company has implemented safeguards to ensure the AI responds appropriately and does not entertain offensive prompts or those related to current events or specific brands.
As reported by TechCrunch, Spotify has been developing AI playlists since October 2023 and before. At that time, the company declined to comment on the issue; however, in December 2023, Spotify confirmed that they were testing the feature.
Spotify is not planning to stop here. CEO Daniel Ek plans to integrate AI into almost every aspect of the platform, including podcast summaries and audio ads, among others.
In January 2024, Spotify launched an in-app purchase mechanism for iPhones in the European Union.
