Microsoft revealed the release of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 on Tuesday through a notification, speculated to be accidental, from the Xbox Game Pass app on Androids and iPhones.
The notification states, “Just announced: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is coming to Game Pass on day one later this year!” The notification may have been an accident, but according to The Verge, the announcement is redirected to a page that does not exist yet. However, whether the missing page is intentional or not is unclear.
The announcement comes as discussions and arguments about the Xbox and Activision Blizzard merger are still occurring. The talks focus on whether the game’s inclusion in the Game Pass would give Xbox an edge over Sony in the console war.
Although it is uncertain how long the Call of Duty franchise will remain available on PlayStation, Phil Spencer’s binding agreement in 2023 to keep the franchise on Sony’s console means that at least Call of Duty Black Ops 6 will be coming to the PlayStation 5. Xbox-exclusive games may become an old concept as Pentiment and Sea of Thieves are already available to be played on Sony’s PlayStation 5.
While Microsoft has yet to comment on the notification publicly, the silence may suggest that it was supposed to appear on people’s phones later.
The official reveal of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 will occur at the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct event on June 9, directly after the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. The duration of the game showcase has not been specified, which does not tell us when the Black Ops 6 event is set to start.
The lead studio of the game, Treyarch, has worked on the game for four years with the tagline for their marketing campaign, “The Truth Lies.” Alongside the tagline, one of the teasers portrays Mount Rushmore covered with “the truth lies” eye masks. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct official reveal event is expected to showcase gameplay, details of the campaign storyline and a few Zombies insights.
