Steam is one of the world’s most popular PC gaming platforms and is used daily by millions of players worldwide. It’s also one of the largest PC gaming markets available, where gamers can buy just about every game from any category and often for a discount.
However, as good as the platform is, it sometimes runs into seemingly random bugs and glitches. In this article, we’re talking about the “1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired” error on Steam, its causes, and how to fix the problem.
What causes the “1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired” error?
The error can be caused by several different issues, including but not limited to the following:
- Missing or corrupt game files.
- Outdated game version.
- Third-party mods that might interfere with game files.

How can the “1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired” error be fixed?
Here are six fixes you can try out.
Disable mods
Disabling any installed mods is a rather easy way of resolving the error. Remember that the exact process for disabling mods can vary from game to game, so be careful to remove mods and not any game files if mod uninstallation requires manually moving files around. Once you remove all mods, launch the game to check if it runs properly.
Force restart Steam
Sometimes, forcefully quitting Steam and restarting can fix such issues.
Step 1: Open the Task Manager by pressing Windows Key + X to open the quick access menu and select the right option.
Step 2: Find and close all Steam-related processes by right-clicking them and selecting End Task.
Once all processes are closed, start Steam as you normally would.
If you’re using macOS instead, you must use the Force Quit option in the Apple menu. After you’ve clicked the option, select Steam from the list of applications that appear and click Force Quit. This should close the program.

Verify game files
Corrupt or missing game files can also cause such an error. Follow these steps to verify game file integrity.
Step 1: Head to your Steam Library, right-click Fall Guys, and select Properties.
Step 2: Head over to the Local Files tab.
Step 3: Click on Verify integrity of local files… and let Steam do its thing.
Try running or downloading your game again to see if that fixed the error.
Check the Windows Firewall
It’s also a good idea to check whether your Windows Firewall is blocking Steam’s connection to its servers. If your firewall is improperly set up or has blocked Steam, it won’t be able to connect, giving you this error.

Run the Check Disk utility
Such errors can indicate your drive failing to perform as it should. Try running the check disk utility to check whether or not your storage drives are, in fact, functional.

Flushing Steam data
You can flush any Steam configurations on your PC using a special Steam command and restart the program. You must open the Run utility by pressing Windows Key + R and run the following command.
steam://flushconfig
Steam will launch and ask for confirmation. Click OK to continue, and you’re good to go. Remember that you’ll have to log into your Steam account again afterwards. If you’re on macOS, you can run the aforementioned command as a browser URL and any browser you choose.
Keep in mind that if you’ve disabled Steam Cloud saves, either enable them before following the aforementioned fix or avoid it altogether, as you might lose all in-game processes once Steam data is flushed.
