How to add volunteer experience on LinkedIn?

Whatever industry you may belong to, volunteer experience is always taken in high regards by potential employers and companies. Therefore, adding your volunteer experience on your LinkedIn profile is a good idea to help employers understand your passion, in addition to your professional skills. Readers and employers may find such experience relatable and interesting.

LinkedIn lets you add volunteer experience on your profile; things you’re really passionate about and how do you want to give it back to the society. The information asked includes the organisation, role and cause you worked for, the time period of the work, and a detailed description of the work you did for the cause.

Follow the steps below in order to add your volunteer experience to your LinkedIn account via the website on PC or Android and iOS apps.

How to add volunteer experience on your LinkedIn account via PC?

Sign in to your account on the LinkedIn website and follow the steps mentioned below to add volunteer experience to your Linkedin account via PC.

Step 1: On your news feed on the home page, click on your profile picture or name on the top-left side of the screen to open your profile to add experience. Alternatively, you can also click on the small Me icon on the top-right of the screen and select View Profile.

Step 2: Click on Add Profile section.

Step 3: Select Background from the drop-down menu.

Step 4: Click on the small + (plus) sign near volunteer experience. A pop-window will appear.

Step 5: Here you can enter the name of the organisation, role, cause, time period and a detailed description. Only the name of the organisation and role is mandatory to fill in, rest of the information you may choose to hide according to your convenience.

Once you’ve completed entering the information of your volunteer experience, click on the Save button.

Your volunteer experience will be automatically added to your profile. Scroll down on your profile to see or re-check the same. 

You can also edit it by clicking on the Pen icon on the right side. In case you want to add new volunteer experience, click on the + (plus) sign (refer to the screenshot below).

In order to rearrange the volunteer experience according to your preference, click on the three horizontal lines and drag up or down to place it where ever you want in that column.

How to add volunteer experience on LinkedIn account via Android or iOS app?

Open the LinkedIn app on your Android or iOS device and follow the steps mentioned below to add volunteer experience on Linkedin.

  • Tap on the small icon with three horizontal lines on the top-left of the screen.
  • Tap on View Profile.
  • Tap on the + (plus) icon on the bottom-right of the screen.
  • Choose Background from the list of options. Then tap on + (plus) icon near volunteer experience.
  • A new window will appear to add your volunteer experience (refer to the screenshot below). Here you can add details like the name of the organisation, role, cause, time period and a detailed description. Only the name of the organisation and role is mandatory to fill in, you may choose to hide the rest of the information according to your convenience.
  • Tap on Save on the top-right of the screen. Your volunteer experience will be automatically added to your profile.
  • Scroll down on your profile to see or re-check the same. You can also edit it by clicking on the Pen icon on the right side. In case you want to add new volunteer experience, click on the + sign (refer to the screenshot below).
  • In order to rearrange the added experiences, scroll up and tap on Reorder. Three horizontal lines will appear next to each added experience. Tap on it and drag up or down to rearrange according to your preference. Tap on Save.
