Fix: Baldur’s Gate 3 sneak attack not working

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a complex and immersive RPG that allows players to choose a variety of playstyles. One of the most essential abilities for rogue characters is the Sneak Attack. However, some players have encountered issues with this skill not working as expected.

If you cannot use a sneak attack in Baldur’s Gate 3, this article discusses how to execute a sneak attack and why the sneak attack fails.

How to execute a Sneak attack?

The Rogue class initiates sneak attacks in two variations: melee and ranged. On your hotbar, you’ll spot an icon showing a hand clutching a dagger for melee and a bow for ranged sneak attacks. To use this ability effectively, follow these steps:

  • Positioning is Key: The core requirement for a sneak attack is positioning your Rogue to have an advantage over the enemy during their attack turn in combat. The Assassin subclass excels at this form of attack, but even with ranged weapons, you still need Advantage, which can be obtained by staying in the shadows and hiding.
  • Execute the Attack: Once your Rogue is in position, click on the sneak attack icon on the Hotbar to execute the backstab, whether a melee or ranged attack.

Why Sneak Attacks May Fail?

Sneak attacks may not always work due to the following reasons:

  • Lack of Advantage: If your character doesn’t have an advantage over an enemy, you won’t be able to execute a sneak attack.
  • Resistance: Some enemies may resist surprise-type attacks, rendering sneak attacks ineffective.
  • Weapon and Equipment: Some weapons and equipment may affect your ability to perform sneak attacks. Make sure your character is using suitable weapons and gear for the task.
  • Stealth Check: Failing a Stealth check, often due to low Dexterity or a lack of proficiency, can prevent successful sneak attacks.
  • Perception Rolls: Enemies might succeed in Perception rolls, exposing your hidden character.
  • True Strike Spell: To guarantee sneak attacks, use the True Strike spell to gain the advantage.
