Whatsapp is one of the most popular messaging apps around and has been since almost its launch back in January 2009. While the app has massively improved since it doesn’t make it immune to the occasional bugs and glitches.

Check your mic
The first thing you should do is check if your phone’s mic is working as expected. Use a voice recording app or your camera to record a quick clip and see if the microphone is picking up sound. If it isn’t, there’s a hardware problem with your device, and you should get it repaired.
Check other apps
There’s a chance that some other app is using your microphone, and because of that, Whatsapp can’t grab hold of it to record voice messages or do calls. If that’s the case, close any actively running apps in the background that might be using your mic and try again.
Clear the app cache
Clearing Whatsapp’s cache from your phone can also help solve the issue as it forces the app to regenerate any corrupt files it might be working with, which could’ve caused the problem in the first place.
- Open your phone’s settings and head over to Apps & notifications.
- Tap See all apps.
- Find Whatsapp in the list.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Tap the Clear storage and Clear cache buttons to remove all data.
Restart your phone, and you should be good to go. You can also try force closing the app from step 5 to see if that helps.
Restart Whatsapp
Another quick thing you can do is restart Whatsapp to freshen things up a bit. Just close Whatsapp from the list of running apps and try opening it again to see if that solves the problem. If you’re on Android, try force closing the app to see if that resolves the error.
Update the app
Whatsapp keeps pushing out frequent updates to fix bugs and add new features. If your version is too old, it might just be deprecated and no longer functional. Try updating the app to see if that fixes your issue.
Allow App permissions
Making sure Whatsapp has all the permissions it needs to function is also a good idea at this point,
- Open your phone’s settings and tap Apps.
- Tap See all apps.
- Find Whatsapp in the list.
- Tap Permissions.
- Make sure Whatsapp has all the permissions it needs, especially microphone permissions.
Now restart your phone and give it another shot.
