What causes regular Discord crashes?

There are various reasons that might crash Discord and they are mentioned below:

  • Hardware acceleration
  • Discord running on compatibility mode.
  • Issues with Discord audio subsystem.
  • Corrupted cache.
  • Using an outdated version of the app.

How to fix the issue?

Here are six fixes that might help you stop Discord from crashing:

Disable Hardware Acceleration

Discord’s Hardware Acceleration feature uses your computer’s graphics processing unit (GPU) to handle graphics and text rendering to enhance your overall experience. However, it’s worth noting that enabling this feature could lead to Discord crashing at startup. Here are the steps to disable it:

Step 1: Open the Discord app on your desktop and click the Settings icon beside your name at the bottom left of the screen.

Step 2: Scroll down and click on the Advanced option under the App Settings section, then turn the toggle off beside Hardware Acceleration.

Restart the Discord and try again.

Disable Compatibility mode

If you’re dealing with constant Discord crashes, the Compatibility mode could be the culprit. To resolve the issue, try disabling Compatibility mode for Discord. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Right-click on the Discord icon and then in the dropdown menu click on the Properties option.

Step 2: Click on the Compatibility tab and then uncheck the box beside Run the program in compatibility mode for available under the Compatibility mode section.

Step 3: Now, click the Apply and OK buttons.

Enable Legacy mode

If Discord keeps crashing on Windows, it might be due to your audio device not being compatible with Discord’s audio system. To prevent such issues, you can set Discord’s audio system to operate in legacy mode. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Open the Discord app on your device and click on the Settings (Gear) icon available beside your username at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2: In the sidebar, click on the Voice & Video option.

Step 3: On the right side, scroll down, find Audio Subsystem, then click on the dropdown menu and then choose the Legacy option.

Clear Discord cache

If certain Discord files or caches become corrupted, it can cause the client to crash. To resolve this, you can delete the Discord caches folder or delete the entire Discord folder. This action won’t cause any further problems because they will be recreated when you restart Discord next time. Here are the steps to do it:

Step 1: Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run prompt, type %appdata% and hit enter.
