Apple Pay has become an effortless form of payment for users with Apple devices. A contactless form of payment, users can use it anywhere without having to carry their wallets. They avoid the hassle of fishing for cash and that exact amount of change in grocery store lines. HEB is one such grocery store in operation in America since 1905, where people stand in queues every few weeks to buy groceries.
In this article, we will discuss whether HEB takes Apple Pay and other forms of acceptable payment.

HEB some Apple (Pay)
HEB is a supermarket chain in America with over 340 stores country-wide. With the growing popularity of cashless transactions and the scare of the pandemic, stores across the world went cashless to curb the virus spread. It was a wake-up call for many to step into the future and HEB hasn’t been behind. In 2019, it invested in self-checkout kiosks and pushed app usage. However, HEB has not yet started accepting Apple Pay.
HEB does not accept Apple Pay in their stores, website, or app.
Why does HEB not accept Apple Pay?
Customers have been requesting HEB to start accepting Apple Pay for many years and they still have not started this practice. No company ever likes to reveal its weaknesses, so we can only assume reasons. One reason can be that HEB probably does not want to pay the processing fee to Apple. A processing fee is incurred when someone uses Apple Pay to pay a merchant rather than cash or a card. The merchant has to pay the company whose gateway has been used to transact that amount.
Since Apple Pay makes it easier for customers to pay by using their Apple watches or their iPhones, they have been appealing to HEB on social media platforms. Despite this, HEB has been holding off on using cashless modes of payment like Apple Pay or Google Pay. Regardless of the backlash received, they refuse to change.
Payment methods accepted at HEB
For contactless payments other than cash, HEB has come up with its own online payment app called HEB Go. You can use HEB Go to pay at the store, on their website, and collect reward points as well as coupons. So it is not like HEB does not have NFC readers at their cash counters or self-checkout kiosks.
However, if you don’t have the app or any cash currently and you are in a hurry to pay, HEB also accepts the following cashless transactions:
- Credit cards and debit cards
- Gift cards or certificates
- Coupons
- SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program gives an Electronic Benefits Card to low-income families. They can use it to buy food at any authorised retail store.
- WIC card
