How to fix ‘Android System WebView Won’t Update’ error?

Android web-view is a system app that comes pre-installed in all Android devices. This app lets third-party apps show content in the in-app browser. 

As you can guess, if this app doesn’t work properly, or is outdated, you can have issues on your phone.

In this article, we’re going over how you can fix the Android System Webview not updating error.

Restart your phone

The first and the foremost thing to do when troubleshooting your devices is to just try and reboot them. Restarting your phone can resolve a bunch of issues on your phone, this one included.

Try waiting

If the Webview is stuck at updating try giving it a good `15-20 minutes to get up to speed. Sometimes the process behind the update is simply running slowly that might give the illusion of the process being stuck. 


Try turning off Bluetooth

It might sound weird, but for some people, temporarily disabling Bluetooth can help get the Webview update moving forward. 


Uninstall Webview updates

While you can’t remove Webview from your phone, you can remove its updates to reset it back to the factory version. After that, you can update it again using the Play Store.

  • Head over to the Play Store and search for Android System WebView.
  • Open the app page tap on the Uninstall button. 
  • Once the uninstall is finished, tap the Update button to get the app up to date again.

Finish updating other apps

Check if there are any other apps that have pending updates on your device. If that’s the case, clear out all pending updates and give it another go. 


Clear out the Webview cache

Similarly, in case clearing out the Play Store cache didn’t work out, you can always try clearing out Webview’s data as well.

  • Tap on View all apps.
  • Find Android System WebView in the list and tap it to proceed.

  • Tap the Clear cache and Clear data buttons to clear the cache and any other stored data.

Clear the Play Store cache

Another method that generally gets stuck apps running is to clear out the Play Store data and cache.

  • Head over to the settings and tap on Apps & notifications.
  • Tap on View all apps.
  • Find Play Store in the list and tap it to proceed.

Now try opening the Play Store again and check if your Webview updates. 


Uninstall Play Store updates

Since we can’t really reinstall the Google Play Store in an Android phone, removing all updates and reinstalling them is the next bet thing.

  • Tap on View all apps.
  • Find Play Store in the list and tap it to proceed.

  • Tap on Uninstall updates.

Now launch the Play Store as you normally would. This should resolve any errors with the Play Store and get the Webview up and running again.
