Canon provides a variety of functionalities for its cameras through the EOS Webcam Utility. However, users often encounter issues where the utility fails to detect their camera.
If you’re facing this problem, don’t worry, here’s a YouTube video explaining the fixes:
In this article, we’ll talk about five troubleshooting tips that you can try:
Here we've covered:
Check your cable connections
Before diving into software-related fixes, ensure that your camera is physically connected correctly to your PC. Follow these steps:

- Verify that the USB cable is properly plugged into both your camera and your PC.
- Check for any visible damage or breaks in the cable.
- Ensure you’re using a data-capable USB cable. Some micro USB cables only support power transfer and won’t transmit data.
- Try plugging the cable into a different USB port on your PC.

Look for conflicting programs
Many users experience issues because other applications are already accessing the camera. For example, if you have OBS Studio running and using the camera, the EOS Webcam Utility may not be able to detect it.

- Close any applications that might be using the camera, such as video conferencing apps (Google Meet, Zoom, Skype, etc.).
- Ensure that the camera is not being used in another instance of OBS Studio or other streaming software.
- Restart the EOS Webcam Utility after closing conflicting applications.

Activate and reactivate the camera
If you’re using the OBS Studio, there’s an option to deactivate and then reactivate the camera, which can help resolve detection issues. Here’s how to do it:

Open the OBS Studio and click on the Deactivate button. After that, click Activate.
This method is particularly useful if you see a black screen or a USB plug icon with a red cross, indicating that the camera is not being detected.

Update the EOS Webcam Utility
Canon has phased out the older versions of the EOS Webcam Utility, and an outdated version might be causing the issue. The latest software, EOS Webcam Utility Pro, is a paid tool, but it is required for proper functionality.

Check your current version by opening the software and navigating to settings. Here, compare your version number with the latest version listed on Canon’s official website. If the version is outdated, download and install the latest version if needed.

Step 2: Search for Webcam Utility. Press the three-dot button and then select Uninstall.

Step 3: Select Uninstall again to complete the process.

Finally, download the latest version from Canon’s official website. By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to resolve most issues with the EOS Webcam Utility not detecting your Canon camera.
