WhatsApp groups enable a person to create a group chat with up to 1024 participants from their contact list. The participants can then use the group to chat with each other and carry out conversations among themselves. A common question asked by users is ‘How to add someone to a WhatsApp group?’

By default, only a group admin or admins have the right to add new participants to their group. They can change the group settings to allow other participants to add members.

Alternatively, they can create an invite link to share with others who want to join the group. For an added layer of security, the admins can enable the Approve new participants button, available within the Group settings tab.

There are a few ways to add someone to a group, but the basic sequence for most operating systems and devices is opening Group chat > Group info > Add participant/Invite via link. This article provides a step-by-step process to add participants to your WhatsApp group on the Android and iOS apps and on web and desktop versions.
