While exciting news emerged in May 2023 that Indian Railways would allow online booking for pets, the functionality is not yet available on the IRCTC website. There are still ways to travel with your furry friend, though the process involves booking your ticket and then making arrangements for your dog upon arrival at the station.

This article discusses the current booking system, types of dog transport, pet requirements and a few things you should remember when travelling with your dog.

Current booking system

Presently, booking for dogs cannot be done online. You can book your own ticket through IRCTC or other authorised channels. To transport your dog, you’ll need to visit the luggage office at the station at least three hours before departure.

Types of Dog Transport

There are three options for transporting your dog on Indian trains:

  • Dog Boxes: These are special compartments managed by the guard. The parcel office at the station you’re departing from needs to confirm availability for dog boxes.
  • AC First Class/First Class Coupe: You can book an entire four-berth cabin or two-berth coupe in AC First Class or First Class. This requires booking a single PNR (Passenger Name Record) and requesting the cabin/coupe allocation from the Divisional Railway Manager or General Manager’s office well in advance.
  • Dog Basket: You can bring smaller pups that can comfortably fit in a basket on board in any class upon paying the usual booking charges.

Pet travel requirements

Always ensure your dog meets health and documentation requirements for train travel. These typically include:

  • Pet identification: Carry a certificate from your veterinarian specifying your dog’s breed, colour, and gender.
  • Vaccinations: Ensure your dog has all required vaccinations and keep the certificates handy.
  • Fitness certificate: Obtain a fitness certificate from your vet within 24-48 hours of departure.
  • Travel essentials: Pack food, water, and a favourite toy to keep your dog comfortable during the trip.

Things to remember

  • Dogs are not allowed in AC 2 tier, AC 3 tier, AC Chair Car, Sleeper Class, or Second-Class compartments.
  • The final decision on allowing your dog in a particular cabin/coupe rests with the concerned railway officials.
  • You are solely responsible for your pet’s well-being during the journey, including providing food and water.
