Having the right tools on hand in Minecraft can make or break your entire game. There are a number of tools that you can use in the game, each for its own specific use.
In this article, we’re taking a look at how to craft a shovel in Minecraft.
Shovels in Minecraft
Shovels in Minecraft work exactly like their real-life counterparts. They’re used to dig up loosely held blocks like gravel or sand. Crafting them is also rather easy. However, a shovel isn’t your first priority when starting out a new Minecraft game. You’d want to equip yourself with a pickaxe and a sword first.
Shovels can also be used as weapons. Depending on the material that you craft your shovel of, you can deal as little as one (when made of wood) to a maximum of five attack damage when made of netherite.

Crafting a shovel
The recipe for crafting a shovel is identical for every element, except netherite. All you need is two sticks and either of the following.
- 1 x Wood Plank (for wooden shovel).
- 1 x Cobblestone or Blacstone (for stone shovel).
- 1 x Iron Ingot (for iron shovel).
- 1 x Gold Ingot (for gold shovels).
- 1 x Diamond (for diamond shovels).
- 1 x Diamond Shovel + 1 x Netherite Ingot + 1 x Smithing Table (for Netherite shovel)
Since crafting a shovel requires a 3 x 3 crafting grid, you also need a crafting table at the ready. Once you have everything you need, follow these steps to craft a shovel.
Crafting a wood, stone, iron, gold or diamond shovel
Follow these steps to craft any shovel from wood to diamond.
Step 1: Walk up to your crafting table and right-click to interact.

Step 2: Place the items in the exact pattern as shown below. Once crafted, move the shovel to your inventory.

Now that your shovel is ready, you’re good to go. Keep in mind that tools only last for some time and break after their durability runs out. The harder the material you use, the longer your tools will last.

Crafting a Netherite Shovel
If you want to craft a Netherite shovel, follow these steps.
Step 1: Walk up to your smithing table and right-click to interact

Step 2: Place a diamond shovel in the first slot and a netherite ingot in the second slot. Once crafted, move the netherite shovel into your inventory.

Another thing to keep in mind when storing shovels (or any tool) in your inventory is that they aren’t stackable, meaning you can only keep one shovel per inventory slot.
