League of Legends, also popularly known as LOL, is one of the highest-grossing games with arguably the biggest eSports tournaments worldwide, with hundreds of millions of players globally and as many spectators during the championships. LOL has been around for more than a decade and not only has its gameplay evolved and became better, it also has received several cosmetic upgrades as well as more communication tools.
Over the past decade, with the evolution of smartphones and mobile internet, emojis became one of the most used features of chatting services like Whatsapp and Messenger, among several others. League of Legends also adopted the pop-culture feature with its twist and called it emotes.
If you’re new to the game or making a comeback after years of being away and the entire concept of emotes in LOL have you baffled, here is how you can set it up, make sure it appears and emote in League of Legends.

How to ensure emotes appear?
If your emotes aren’t appearing correctly or you aren’t able to see your enemies emotes, you’ve probably turned them off from the in-game settings.
If you’re in-game, you can press the Esc (Escape) button to access the menu and if you’re in the client window, click on the Gear (settings) button at the top-right beside the close (X) window button. On the settings menu, select Interface from the sidebar on the left and then scroll down to find the Emotes heading. Ensure that the Emote Bubble Display is set to On and that the check-box beside Mute Enemy Emotes is unchecked.
How to setup emotes?
You can set five emotes in your emote tray at a given time and use them throughout the game. Besides, you can also set four separate emotes for specific occasions, including the beginning of the game, when the first blood is drawn by your team, when your team scores an ace and when you’re victorious in the battle. The four special emotes appear automatically.
To set the five emotes that can be accessed via the emote tray within a LOL game, follow the steps mentioned below.
- Click on Collection from the options at the very top of your client.
- Then click on Emotes from the option tray at the top of the Collection page.
- You’ll see all the available emotes in the sidebar to the left. Drag and drop the emotes you want to use in-game in the five slots available in a big circle. You can also set the specific emotes here.
- Once you’re done, click on the Save button to the top-right of the emote box.

How to emote in LOL?
To emote in a LOL game, press T button on your keyboard and then press the left button on your mouse and slide in the direction of the emote you wish to use. The emote in the direction of your choice will be highlighted. o choose the emote in the centre, simply click in the middle. You’ll see the emote at the top of your champion for a few seconds if you’ve used the instructions above accurately. You can only emote a limited number of times simultaneously, as is the case with pings.
