When you lock your computer or it enters an idle or sleep mode, your presence status changes to Away. Similarly, on a mobile device, if the Teams app is in the background, your presence status also changes to Away.

Selecting a particular presence state by a user is given priority over any app activity update. For example, if you set yourself as “Do not disturb,” your presence will stay as “Do not disturb” regardless of whether you join a meeting or receive a call. User-defined states in Teams have default expiration settings to ensure that users do not display a status that may become irrelevant after a certain period. However, this rule does not apply to your “Available” status, and if you step away from your laptop, your status will change to “Away” instantly.
