Reset AirTag from Find My app
When you initially configure an AirTag, it becomes connected to your Apple ID by default. This means it’s tied to your Apple ID and can’t be used by anyone else unless you reset it. Before following the steps below, make sure the AirTag is within Bluetooth range.

- On your iPhone, open the Find My app. Tap on the Items tab, scroll through your items and tap on your AirTag.
- Scroll down in the AirTag settings and tap on the Remove Item.
- Tap on Remove to confirm your action.
Following these steps will disconnect the AirTag from your Apple ID. If the tracker is close by and turned on, it also returns to its original factory settings.
Physically Reset an AirTag
If you’re removing an AirTag that’s not close by or if you’ve bought a pre-owned one that hasn’t been reset by the previous owner then follow the steps below:

- Remove the Stainless steel cover of your AirTag by pressing it and rotating it anti-clockwise.
- Remove the battery and place it back; it will beep once. You have to perform this step five times in total, and you will hear a different beep the fifth time, which means it has been reset and is ready to pair.
- After that, put the cover back and rotate it clockwise.
