With more than 2 billion users worldwide, Whatsapp has become a major platform for personal and business communication. For businesses, connecting with a wide audience in a timely and efficient manner is key for marketing, customer support, and engagement strategies. Sending bulk WhatsApp messages can greatly assist in reaching these objectives. However, it’s vital to proceed cautiously to prevent spamming and violating Whatsapp’s terms of service.

This article discusses two methods of sending bulk WhatsApp messages; both methods are for different budgets and needs.

Use the Whatsapp Business app

You can send bulk WhatsApp messages for free, but there’s a limitation with broadcast messages – you can only create a list containing up to 256 users. This approach works on both the regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps. Here’s how to create a broadcast list:

  • Open the Whatsapp or Whatsapp business app and tap on the Triple dot icon at the top right corner of the screen.
  • In the dropdown menu, tap on the New broadcast or New broadcast list option.
  • Select the users you want to send the message to, and after that, tap on the Tickmark button at the bottom right corner of the screen.

Use the Whatsapp Cloud API

For larger-scale bulk messaging and advanced features, consider the WhatsApp Cloud API. This requires partnering with a third-party provider that offers API access. Here’s a simplified overview:

  • API provider selection: Research a reputable provider that aligns with your needs. Costs and features can vary. There are many providers in the market, like Wati and WANotifier.
  • Account setup: Work with your chosen provider to set up a WhatsApp Business API account.
  • Contact management: Create and manage your contact lists within the provider’s platform.
  • Message design and personalisation: Craft your bulk messages and leverage the API’s potential for advanced personalisation using templates and variables.
  • Scheduling and delivery: Schedule your bulk messages for optimal delivery times and track their delivery status through the provider’s interface.

The best method depends on your needs. The WhatsApp Business app is a free option for small-scale broadcasts, while the Cloud API offers greater scalability, personalisation, and automation for larger campaigns. Before deciding, consider factors like budget, message volume, and desired level of customisation.

Additional tips

  • Whatsapp terms of service: To avoid account suspension, always comply with Whatsapp’s terms of service. Focus on sending relevant and valuable messages with a clear opt-out option.
  • Data privacy: Ensure you have permission from recipients to contact them on Whatsapp. Respect user privacy and data protection regulations.
  • Avoid spam: Focus on informative and valuable messages. Promotional messages should be used sparingly.
  • Personalise when possible: Even in bulk messages, a touch of personalisation can go a long way (e.g., using contact names).
