Kindle eReaders use E-ink technology for display as opposed to an LED display, which is used for most modern screen-based devices. E-ink creates an Electronic Paper Display (EPD), or an ePaper Display, which resembles ink on paper.
This technology uses far less power compared to an LED display which is why devices like the Kindle can stay on for much longer on a single battery charge. Since it loses very little charge even when in sleep mode, this could be the reason why it does not have a power-off option.

How to turn off the Kindle’s screen?
You can put the Kindle in sleep mode by pressing the power button. In sleep mode, the Kindle displays a static screen saver or an advertisement depending on whether you bought an ad-free or a with-ad Kindle.

However, you can turn off the screen if you don’t want it to display a screen saver. Here’s a step-by-step of how to do it:
- Step 1: Press the power button until a Power dialogue box appears. Depending on the model and type of your Kindle, the power button can be at the bottom, at the top or at the side of the device.
- Step 2: In the dialogue box that appears, tap Screen Off. You will be left with a dull, blank white screen.

To switch the screen back on, press the power button and release. The screen will go back to the page where you left off.
If you want to turn off your Kindle because of a functionality issue and powering it off and powering it back on might resolve the issue, here are 2 things you can do instead: restart or reboot Kindle
How to restart your Kindle?
To do so, follow the steps to turn off your screen mentioned above until the Power dialogue box appears. Select the Restart option.

To restart your device from the Settings menu, follow these steps:
- Step 1: Go to the home page and tap the three lines in the top right corner.
- Step 2: From the drop-down menu, tap Settings.
- Step 3: Click on the three lines in the top right corner of the Settings tab.
- Step 4: From the drop-down menu, tap Restart.

Reboot your device
- Step 1: Press the power button for 20 seconds even after the Power dialogue box appears.
- Step 2: Wait until the screen turns slightly bright, then release the button.
The silhouette of a child under a tree will appear, with a progress bar toward the bottom of the screen. Once the progress bar reaches the end, your Kindle will turn on.
