How to turn off Steam notifications?

Steam is one of the most popular PC gaming platforms with perhaps the most expansive game library available on the internet. That said, it’s the social features that Steam offers which make it stand apart from other PC gaming platforms like Origin or Epic.

These social features do come with their own caveats though, the biggest being notifications. Steam notifies you of just about anything your friends might do on the platform, in addition to notifications regarding your own activities and library. In this article, we’re talking about how you can disable your Steam notifications for a distraction-free gaming experience.

Disabling Social notifications in Steam

First up, we’ll take a look at how to disable social notifications in Steam. Just follow these steps.

Step 1: Right-click the Steam tooltip in the taskbar and select Friends.

Step 2: Click the settings gear icon in the top right.

Step 3: In the Friends List Settings menu, head down to Notifications and select the notifications you want to enable or disable.

Disabling in-game achievement notifications in Steam

You can’t specifically disable in-game achievement notifications in Steam. But if you disable the in-game Steam overlay, the program won’t show any achievement notifications. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Open Steam, click the Steam option in the top left followed by Settings.

Step 2: Head over to the In-Game tab and uncheck the Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game checkbox.

Do keep in mind though that this process will disable the in-game overlay for every game. If you only want to disable it for specific games, follow these steps.

Step 1: Open Steam and head over to your Library.

Step 2: Right-click the game you want to disable the overlay for and select Properties.

Step 3: On the General tab, uncheck the Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game checkbox.

Disabling other Steam notifications

There are still several other notifications that might show up from time to time. If you want to disable these as well, follow these steps.

Step 1: Open Steam, click the Steam option in the top left followed by Settings.

Step 2: Head over to the In-Game tab and under the When a screenshot is taken heading, uncheck the Display a notification checkbox to disable screenshot notifications.

Step 3: Now head over to the Interface tab and uncheck the Notify me about additions or changes to my games, new releases, and upcoming releases checkbox.

Step 4: Finally, head over to Music and disable the When a new track begins checkbox under Display a notification.
