Nothing Phone (1) unveiled: Price, Specs and Release Date

After months of teases and leaks, Nothing has finally unveiled its much-awaited Phone (1). The device features the Snapdragon 778G+ SoC, up to 12GB RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. The base model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage starts at £399, and sales will begin from July 21 onwards.

The Phone (1) features a flat 6.55-inch 2400 x 1080 display running at 120Hz. The display also supports HDR10 and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 (so is the back). The back of the phone is covered in light bars. Nothing calls the Glyph Interface, which can light up in sync with your notification sounds.

There’s a 4500mAh battery to keep everything up and running, which can be charged at 33 watts over wired charging and 15W over wireless. The phone also supports reverse wireless charging at 5W. In terms of software, you get NothingOS, the company’s in-house Android skin built over Android 12, made to blend the phone’s hardware and software better.

Design

The design has been Nothing’s biggest marketing point, especially for the last few months, as the company has built up a lot of hype about how Phone (1) is different from anything else on the market, and they’re not wrong.

The device has a transparent glass back clearly showing off the tech crammed inside the 7.6mm thick phone. The company has opted for a rather clean-looking design with white textured backplates covering the internals and highlighting bits of the phone, including the wireless charging coil.

The see-through back also allows for the Glyph Interface, a unique feature that Nothing brings back to smartphones. This pattern of white light bars covers different parts of the phone like the wireless charging coil, camera module, and charging circuitry, among other things.

The Glyph interface lights up differently in response to whatever’s going on with your phone. The lights are synced to flash in unique patterns according to custom sounds. You can set patterns unique to each notification, meaning you can tell who’s calling or texting or what app is sending you notifications by looking at the light pattern. It even doubles up as a charging indicator telling you exactly how much battery you have.

Performance

As mentioned before, the phone is powered by a modified version of the Snapdragon 778G SoC, called Snapdragon 778G+ which adds wireless and reverse wireless charging. In terms of memory and storage, you get the following three options:

  • 8GB + 126GB
  • 8GB + 256GB
  • 12GB + 256GB

All three memory options are UFS 3.1

Camera

The phone has a dual-camera module on the back featuring a 50MP main camera and a 16MP wide-angle camera. The camera sensor is the Sony IMX766, popular with many Android flagships. Over on the front, you get a 16MP punch-hole camera to the side.

Display

The Nothing Phone (1) features a 120Hz OLED display running at 2400 x 1080 resolution. The display has HDR10 support and is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Nothing has used a curved OLED display to achieve a flat front on the phone with equal bezels on all sides.

Battery, Charging and Software

Nothing’s first smartphone gets a 4500mAh battery with 33W fast charging, 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging. In terms of connectivity, the phone has WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6 with Bluetooth 5.2. The fingerprint was rumoured to be embedded within the power button previously. However, we now know that it’s embedded under the screen.

Additionally, there are custom widgets for things like weather, clock and even an NFT widget that keeps you posted about things like floor prices built right into the phone.
