The way to pause a short video to take a screenshot probably is by simply not tapping on it. Yes, you heard that right; the video will only get muted if you tap once. Not paused? No. The way to pause these few-second short videos is by:

Open the Instagram app on your phone and tap the clapperboard icon to start watching reels.
If you want to pause a reel, you can tap the three vertical dots in the bottom right. This will pause the reel and show several options, including sharing, remixing and reporting options.
Alternatively, you can press and hold anywhere on the screen to pause the reel at the current frame.

Trying to find reels on your personal computer might prove difficult, as Instagram only provides an icon for reels on their app. However, not to be dismayed, as you can still view reels by visiting any page of your liking or clicking on reels on your daily feed.
