Switzerland-based Proton, known for its encrypted services such as Proton Mail, has launched a desktop application for Windows and macOS in beta along with over 50 new enhancements this year. The new application offers users secure and encrypted access to Proton Mail and Proton Calendar.

The release of the desktop app is part of Proton’s broader commitment to making privacy and security accessible to users across all major platforms. This move positions Proton Mail as a strong alternative to mainstream email services like Gmail and Outlook, particularly for users conscious of privacy violations.

“While many people use email on the desktop in a browser, desktop apps can still provide advantages such as better offline support. For this reason, we have decided to launch a desktop app, something that even Gmail does not provide. Together with our support for third-party desktop email apps via Proton Mail Bridge, users now have a complete set of options for how they want to access their encrypted emails on desktop,” said Andy Yen, CEO of Proton.

The app promises a clutter-free experience, offline access to emails, automatic updates, and end-to-end encryption.

Proton is surely and securely cementing its presence on all major platforms.

The new desktop app launch is accompanied by over 50 community-requested enhancements to boost productivity for businesses and consumers. Notable features include email snooze, attachment previews, and calendar improvements.

One feature that makes Proton Mail a leader among its competitors is the encrypted email forwarding capability, making it the first email provider to offer end-to-end encryption while automatically forwarding emails between Proton Mail accounts.

Proton Mail for Windows and macOS is currently in beta for Visionary users, with availability for all users expected in early 2024. Visionary plans have been reopened for new sign-ups until January 3, 2024.

Proton is working hard to improve its products and has offered many features to its customers. In May, Proton introduced an auto-forwarding feature allowing users to forward their emails from Gmail to Proton Mail. Last month, Proton announced end-to-end encrypted sharing in the Proton Calendar.

Yet another Proton product, Proton Pass, came out of beta in June. A Secure Password Sharing feature was introduced on the platform in October and in November, Proton Pass incorporated the Proton Sentinel high-security program with its Plus plans.
