The Google Assistant is a pretty handy tool that’s available in the millions of Android phones all over the world. With Google dumping in more time, effort and research into it, the assistant is only going to get better.
However, it’s not for everyone and some people like to do things their own way. Also, since the Assistant is integrated into the home screen button, it can often be quite an annoyance if you don’t really mean to use it that often.

How to disable Google Assistant from the Home screen?
The process is actually quite straightforward, in stock Android at least. Different phone manufactures do put different skins on which might mean you might have to look around a bit but the basic steps are going to be the same.
- Head over to your device settings and tap on Apps & notifications.
- Tap on Default apps.
- Tap on Assist app.
- Tap on Assist app again.
- Tap on the None option to disable the Google Assistant.
Now, long-pressing the home button would do nothing.

How to disable Google Assistant completely?
If you’re looking to not use the Assistant at all and want to disable it completely, here’s what you can do instead.
- Open the Google App and tap on the More tab in the bottom right.
- Tap on the Settings option.
- Tap on Google Assistant.
- Scroll down to find the General settings option.
- Toggle the Google Assistant setting off.

How to deactivate Google Assistant for headphones?
For a lot of people, the assistant accidentally pops up when their headphones are plugged in thanks to an inbuilt setting. Follow these steps to disable it and get rid of that annoyance.
- Open the Google App and tap on the More tab in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Tap on the Settings option.
- Tap on Google Assistant.
- Scroll down to find the Devices settings.
- Tap on Wired headphones.
- Toggle the Get help from Google setting off.
