Snapdrop is a convenient and popular web-based file-sharing tool that allows users to seamlessly transfer files across various devices. This article discusses why Snapdrop is not working and nine ways to help you resolve the issue.

Why is Snapdrop not working?

Below are the possible reasons why Snapdrop is not working:

  • Both devices are not on the same network.
  • Temporary glitches.
  • VPN is enabled.
  • Corrupted browser cache and cookies.
  • Browser compatibility.
  • Interference by extensions.
  • The Snapdrop server is down.

How to fix it?

Here are nine methods to help you fix the issue with the Snapdrop:

Ensure both devices are connected to the same WiFi

If you’re having trouble with Snapdrop, the first step is to ensure that the device sending the files and the one receiving them are connected to the same WiFi network. This is important because Snapdrop can only transfer files between devices on the same network.

Snapdrop uses WebRTC technology for file transfer, so it’s essential that both devices share the same WiFi network. However, if your devices are already connected to the same network and Snapdrop still doesn’t function, you can explore other fixes below.

Check the server status

While uncommon, Snapdrop’s servers could be experiencing temporary issues. You can do a quick search for Snapdropdown, which might reveal any reported outages. If there’s a known issue on Snapdrop’s end, you may need to wait until it’s resolved before attempting to use the service again.

Restart the devices

Sometimes, a simple restart of both the sending and receiving devices can work wonders. Restarting your devices can clear temporary memory issues and refresh the network connection.

Disable VPN

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) can sometimes interfere with Snapdrop’s ability to connect devices on the same network. Try temporarily disabling your VPN to see if Snapdrop starts working properly.

Clear browser cache and cookies

When your browser’s cache and cookies are overloaded with data, Snapdrop’s performance on your device can be affected. Files might get corrupted, causing problems with certain websites. Try clearing your browsing data to see if that helps Snapdrop function properly.

Disable extensions

Browser extensions or add-ons can sometimes conflict with web applications. Temporarily disable any extensions installed in your browser, and then try using Snapdrop again. If it works without the extensions, you can enable them one by one to identify which one is causing the issue. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Click on the Triple-dot menu. In the dropdown menu, hover over Extensions and then click Manage Extensions.

Step 2: Now, turn the toggle off beside the extension you want to disable.

Try another browser

If Snapdrop isn’t working in one browser, try using a different browser. The problem may be specific to the browser you’re currently using. Switching to another browser can help determine if this is the case.

Reinstall the Snapdrop app

If you’re using the Snapdrop app, try uninstalling and reinstalling it. This can often clear up temporary glitches that might be hindering file transfers. Sometimes app updates can introduce compatibility issues as well, so a reinstall can ensure you’re on the latest working version.

Allow Snapdrop through the Firewall

On some devices, firewalls might block Snapdrop’s connection. See if you can add Snapdrop to your firewall to allow for smooth file transfers. Firewalls are important for security, so only make changes if you’re sure about it. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Press the Windows + I  key to open Windows settings and click the Update & Security option.
