AirTags, crafted by Apple, are compact tracking devices to help you locate personal items. They prove invaluable for individuals prone to forgetting things.
These devices employ various technologies, including Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband (UWB), and Near Field Communication (NFC). Each technology serves a distinct purpose:
- Your iPhone detects the nearby AirTag via Bluetooth.
- Ultra Wideband, on the other hand, helps pinpoint the location of the AirTag.
- You can access your AirTag with your iPhone or other compatible device with NFC.
Moreover, AirTags are water and dust-resistant with a rating of IP67. This means a little splash won’t harm your AirTags; you can use them in various environments.
But what batteries do AirTags use? You should know the answer to this question as it can help you in a crisis. In this article, we’ll answer this question.
Battery used by AirTags
AirTags use a CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery to operate.
Many companies like Duracell and Panasonic manufacture these batteries. These batteries are common, and you can find them in almost any electronic shop near your home or online.

The CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery finds applications in diverse electronic devices, including watches, calculators, and various medical instruments. The battery has a long shelf life and can operate in extreme temperatures.
Apple says the AirTag has a battery designed for approximately one year of operation. This is attributed to the AirTag’s energy-efficient design, with prolonged periods in sleep mode, activating only when triggered by movement or the detection of a nearby device.
Some natural factors, such as temperature and humidity, may also affect the battery’s performance.

While few people have complained on the Apple forum that Duracell batteries won’t work with AirTags, our AirTag came with a Duracell battery. The forum member alleges that due to a special coating that Duracell covers their batteries with, they don’t work well with AirTag. If that’s the case with you, too, you can use Panasonic and other battery suppliers.
