How does an AirTag work?

AirTag utilises a combination of Bluetooth technology and Apple’s vast network of devices to help users locate their belongings. The device relies on the Find My network, which consists of millions of Apple devices worldwide. When an AirTag is out of Bluetooth range of its paired device, it can utilise other nearby Apple devices to communicate its location to the owner anonymously via the Find My app.

One of the notable features of AirTag is its precision tracking capabilities. The U1 chip in the latest iPhones allows for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, enabling more accurate location tracking when the paired device is nearby. This is especially useful for pinpointing the exact location of a lost item indoors.

Can you track AirTag miles away?

Yes, AirTag can be tracked miles away.

An AirTag can be tracked from far distances, potentially even across countries, as long as it stays within Bluetooth range of an Apple device connected to the Find My network.

With nearly a billion devices on this network, there’s a good chance an AirTag will link up with one and update its location in the Find My app. Although the updates won’t happen in real time, users will get a general sense of where the AirTag is located.

However, this might not apply in remote areas like wilderness or less populated areas. If the AirTag goes beyond the reach of the Find My network, the app will only display its last known location. If it later connects to an Apple device, the location information will be updated. Since there’s no fixed limit on how far an AirTag can be tracked, it’s common for users to place it in their luggage, making it easier to find if the bags go missing.

Yes, AirTags work internationally. As mentioned above, they rely on the global Find My network, allowing them to be tracked and located in different countries as long as Apple devices have Bluetooth and the Find My app nearby.
