Minecraft has a lot to offer in its infinite blocky word, and with enchantments, it goes a step further. Players can enchant their equipment to have more damage, protect them better or even give them better luck when fishing.

What is Fortune in Minecraft?
Fortune is an enchantment applied to mining and digging tools and increases the drop amount or chances of specific item drops. It does not, however, increase experience drops.Â
The percentage of getting a higher drop goes up with the enchantment level, which tops out at three. With regular tools, you’ll get one drop per item; the Fortune enchantment can multiply it up to four times. The drop amount depends on what you’re mining.
The primary tools you’ll be using the Fortune enchantment are the pickaxe, shovel, axe and hoe. As mentioned above, level three is the highest level of enchantment. You can either use an enchanting table or an anvil to apply the enchantment.
Ores
When mining ores, here’s what your probabilities will look like.

Discrete random
Discrete random blocks such as glowstone, melons, nether wart, redstone ore, sea lanterns and sweet berries work on a different distribution system. Here, each drop amount is equally likely to be dropped.
In such cases, Fortune increases the maximum number of drops by one per level; however, maximum drop limitations still apply.
Grass and ferns
All grass and ferns have a fixed chance to drop wheat seeds. If, however, the drop happens, the Fortune enchantment can increase the maximum number of seeds by two depending on the enchantment’s level.
Seeds
Seeds such as Beetroots, carrots, potatoes and wheat use a binomial distribution. When using Fortune, the number of tests increases by one per level; hence the maximum number of drops increases.
Others
Other than the types mentioned above, depending on the level of Fortune enchantments, you can also get
- higher possibility of finding flint in gravel.
- higher possibility of saplings and sticks dropping from leaves.
- higher possibility of apples dropping from oak and dark oak leaves
- gold nuggets dropping from gilded blackstone
- Twisted and weeping vines dropping from themselves
Incompatibilties
The Fortune enchantment is mutually exclusive to the Silk Touch enchantment, meaning both will not work together. If they are applied to the same tool, the Silk Touch enchantment takes precedence over Fortune for blocks affected by both enchantments.
