What causes the 0xc0000001 error code?

This is a boot-time error that can be caused by several issues, including but not limited to corrupt system files, damaged SAM or an issue with your RAM modules. Your PC may or may not boot in this situation.

Even if you can boot your PC, chances are you’ll run into a BSoD soon enough. Luckily enough, most causes for the issue are easy to fix, except, of course, the issue with your RAM modules, which is most likely going to mean a replacement.

How to fix the 0xc0000001 error?

Here are a few solutions you can try to get rid of the error.

Run the Check Disk utility

The BSoD can very well be a sign of your boot drive failing to perform as it should. Try running the check disk utility to check whether or not your storage drives are, in fact, functional.

Run the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool

If your RAM is seated properly but is failing, it can trigger this error. To check if there’s an issue with your RAM, follow these steps.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Windows Memory Diagnostics. Then, click the corresponding search result.

Step 2: Run the tool and click the Restart now button to check for problems.

Run an SFC scan

Step 1: Press Windows Key + S to bring up the Cortana/Search box and search for Powershell. Open Windows Powershell from the search results.

Step 3: If the SFC scan finds any problem, use the following command to resolve them. 

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart your PC, and the 0xc0000001 error should be resolved. If that doesn’t help, you can also run a DISM scan to fix any other errors by using this guide


Perform a Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is an integral feature of Windows. It can help iron out many issues that may otherwise impact your system’s performance, including repairing any processes using too much CPU.

Move SAM files

Corrupt SAM (Security Access Manager) files can also trigger the issue. Moving these files over to the repair folder can help solve the problem. 

Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Safe Mode. Click the corresponding search result.

copy C:\Windows\Repair\Sam C:\Windows\System32\Config

Now restart your PC, and the 0xc0000001 error should be fixed.


Repair your system
