However, for all its fluidity and ease of use, Android still isn’t immune to random bugs and glitches. In this article, we’re taking a look at why your Android apps keep crashing or closing automatically and what you can do to fix the problem.
Why does this happen?
This is a rather generic error. An Android app can crash for a number of reasons including but not limited to
- Corrupt app caches.
- Insufficient device space or CPU/GPU resources.
- Permissions not being granted.
- Internet connectivity issues.
- Outdated app versions.
- Outdated Android version.

How to fix this?
Here are a few fixes you can try out to see if they help solve the issue around apps automatically closing on Android.Â
Restart your phone
The first and foremost thing to do when troubleshooting your devices is to just try and reboot them. Restarting your phone can resolve a bunch of issues on your phone, this one included.
Finish updating other apps
Check if there are any other apps that have pending updates on your device. If that’s the case, clear out all pending updates and give it another go.
Check for updates
Make sure to check your phone for updates as well. More often than not, bugs in Android are ironed out rather quickly, especially if they’re impacting a popular app.
Free up some space
Not enough storage space on your phone is also one of the leading causes of apps crashing. Generally, your phone will tell you when you’re low on space and should delete some content off your phone to give it some breathing space, but even if it doesn’t it’s always a good idea to keep some extra space on your phone just in case.

Clear the cache
Corrupt files in the app’s cache can also cause it to misbehave. Try clearing out the affected app’s cache and data to resolve the issue.
- Open your phone’s settings and tap on Apps & notifications.
- Tap on Show all apps.
- Find and tap on the app that’s crashing.
- Tap on Storage & cache.
- Tap the Clear cache and Clear data buttons.
Restart your phone and try again. Alternatively, you can also force stop the app from Step 4 and try starting it again.
Reset app preferences
Another thing that can help restore this process is resetting app preferences. Here’s how.
- Head over your phone’s settings and tap on Apps & notifications.
- Tap on See all apps.
- Tap on the three vertical dots in the top -right.
- Tap on Reset app preferences.
Restart your phone, and the process should be trouble-free.
Update your phone
More often than not, a system update will resolve any crashes or errors you’re facing in the operating system. If there’s a bug in the OS or an issue with the current software version installed on your phone, updating it can eliminate any such issues at once.
- Open your phone’s settings and scroll down to System.
- Tap on Advanced.
- Tap on System Updates.
- Your device will automatically start downloading any available updates.
Wait for the updates to download and install and for your device to reboot.
Factory reset your phone
If nothing else works, try factory resetting your phone. Yes, you will lose all your data, but a factory reset will fix most, if not all, the problems on your phone.
- Head over to your phone’s settings and tap on System.
- Tap on Advanced.
- Tap on Reset options.
- Tap Erase all data (factory reset)
- Tap the final conformation and wait for your device to reboot.
