Snapchat is one of the most popular messaging apps around at the moment. That’s not only because of the app’s gamification of messaging and privacy focussed features like disappearing messages but also because it’s a fully-fledged camera app in addition to being a messaging one.
The app regularly gets new filters, called ‘lenses’. Some lenses are, of course, more popular than others as snaps featuring these lenses go viral. In this article, we’re talking about how you can get the butterfly lens on Snapchat.

Unlocking Snapchat lenses
Snapchat lenses don’t just appear on your phone out of the blue. There are hundreds of thousands of lenses out there, and users have to option to search and store their favourite ones for quick access when they need them.ย
You can add the butterfly lens (or any other Snapchat lens) to your app in three ways.ย
Using Snapcodes
Snapcodes are one of the easiest ways of sharing things on Snapchat, including profiles and lenses. It’s the same concept as scanning a QR code, except the whole experience is personalised for Snapchat. All you have to do is open the app and point the camera at the snapcode. A notification will appear at the bottom of your screen, and you can tap it to get to the lens.

Using Search
In addition to scanning Snapcodes, Snapchat allows you to search for your favourite lenses by keyword. Here’s how.
- Open Snapchat and tap the face icon to the right of the capture button.
- Tap the search icon in the bottom right.
- Tap the search bar and enter your search query.ย
- Snapchat will show you all the relevant lenses. Just tap on the one you want to try, and you’re good to go.ย
Using a share link
Last but not least, you can also ask your friends currently using the butterfly lens to send you a lens share link. Tapping on this link will instantly add the lens to your Snapchat.
- Open Snapchat and tap the face icon to the right of the capture button.
- Tap the i icon in the top left.
- Tapย Export lens.
- Select the app where you want to send your friend the link, or copy it to your clipboard.ย
