Mining is a major part of Minecraft. It is after all the primary method for extracting the required minerals you need to progress further in the game. Pickaxes in Minecraft
Pickaxes are an important part of Minecraft as they’re the primary tool used to dig up the ground and form mines to extract elements like coal, iron, copper, and gold among others.
Just like every other tool in the game, pickaxes can also be made from six different materials — wood, stone, iron, gold, diamond and netherite. The only difference here is in the durability and mining capability of the tool with wood being the weakest and netherite being the strongest.
As you progress in the game, you’re going to have to use better elements to craft your tools as weaker elements like wood will not be able to mine certain elements effectively or not be able to mine them at all. If you’re just starting out, making a wooden pickaxe and then quickly moving to a stone tool is highly recommended.

Crafting a Diamond Pickaxe
Regardless of the raw material used, the recipe for crafting a pickaxe will remain the same. This is what you need:
- 3 x Diamonds
- 2 x Sticks
Keep in mind that since crafting a pickaxe requires a 3 x 3 crafting grid, you’re also going to need a crafting table. Once you have the elements required, follow these steps.
Step 1: Walk up to your crafting table and right-click to interact.
Step 2: Place the diamonds and sticks in precisely the manner shown below.
Once you’re done, you can move the pickaxe back to your inventory for later use.Â
