Method 1: Turn off Bluetooth on iPad

Turning Bluetooth off on your iPad will not only disable Apple Pencil but will also disconnect other Bluetooth-based devices. Hence, we recommend trying out the other methods mentioned further ahead in this article.

  • Open Settings and access Bluetooth sub-section.
  • Toggle Bluetooth off.

Note: Pulling down Control Centre and deactivating Bluetooth from there will not disconnect the Apple Pencil.

Method 2: Turn off iPad

Turning an iPad off resets the connection between Apple Pencil and the tablet. To start using the stylus again you will have to pair it either by plugging it in (1st-gen) or placing it on the magnetic strip (2nd-gen).

Listed below are the steps you need to follow to turn off iPad:

For devices without a Home button

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button alongwith either of the volume buttons for a few seconds until, “slider to power off” shows up. Do as shown to turn off the iPad.

For devices with a Home button

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button to bring forth the slider to turn off iPad. Do as shown to turn off the iPad.

You can restart your iPad by holding down the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo is displayed.

Method 3: Unpair Apple Pencil

If you need to leave Bluetooth on to use another device, you can also unpair Apple Pencil using the steps listed below.

  • Open Settings and tap on Bluetooth.
  • Locate Apple Pencil.
  • Tap on the icon and choose Forget This Device.

Method 4: Disconnect Apple Pencil within applications

Until now, every method mentioned disconnects your Apple Pencil from your iPad rendering it unusable across all applications and UI elements. Fortunately, Apple also allows developers to build an app-specific disconnect feature which limits the stylus’ functionality within that application.
