Discord, a widely used communication platform, has become a hub for gamers, friends, and communities to come together and chat. While its interface is user-friendly, many users are unaware of many symbols and icons available on Discord.

Icons on the Server bar

As soon as you open Discord, you’ll first see the server bar on the left side, whether you’re using it on your computer or your phone. This bar is where you can see all the servers you’re part of. It also has some handy features related to these servers on the bar.

Add a server (big plus sign) icon

This icon allows you to create your own Discord server.


Discover (Compass) icon

This icon allows you to discover servers on Discord; you can join any server you like and search for a specific server by its name.

Symbols and icons on the Username bar

The username bar is where you will find your username, located at the bottom left corner of the screen, and there are a few more icons available other than your username on the bar.

Various symbols on the profile pic

There are a few symbols that you will see on other users’ profile pics as well as on your profile pic; these symbols show:

  • Green dot: If you see a green on the user’s profile, the user is online.
  • Half moon: It means the user is idle.
  • Stop sign: It is the do not disturb symbol; if you see this on a user profile, then they will not receive any message notifications.
  • Grey dot: It means that the person is offline.

You can also use these symbols to change your status.


Mute (Microphone) Icon

This icon allows you to mute your mic; if you are in a voice channel or on a voice call with someone, you can click on it to mute your mic.


Deafen (Headphone) icon

The Deafen icon in Discord is like a mute-all button. When you click it, all sounds in Discord stop. It doesn’t matter if it’s from voice or video calls, voice channels, music, or even YouTube videos playing in Discord. It’s great when you want complete silence instantly.

But remember, if you turn off the headphone icon, your microphone also gets turned off. This means others won’t be able to hear you either.


Settings (Cog) icon

This icon will allow you to access user-specific settings and preferences, including profile settings, notification settings, and more, making it a convenient way to customise your Discord experience.

Symbols in the Chat list

You will find your DMs in the chat list, and below, we have explained some of its symbols.

Create a DM (Plus sign) symbol

This symbol will allow you to start a new DM with your friends; when you click on it, it will show you your friends, and you can create a single and group DM.


Remove (Cross) symbol

When you hover over a chat, you will see a cross symbol beside it; when you click on it, that chat will be removed.

Icons in the Message box

Here are a few icons available in the message box.

Plus icon

This will allow you to upload any file in the DM message box, but when you are in a server and click this icon, you will find two more options: create a new thread and use apps.


Gift icon

This icon will allow you to send Nitro as a gift to your friend.


GIF, Sticker, Emoji icon

These are the visual elements that everybody uses while chatting with someone.

Icons when you hover over the message

When you hover over, you will see a few icons, which may differ depending on whether you are in DM or a server.

Add a reaction (Emoji with a plus sign) icon

This icon will let you add a reaction to the message.


Add a Super reaction icon

This icon will let you add a super reaction to the message.


Edit (Pencil) icon

When you hover over your chat, you will see this icon, letting you edit your message.


Reply (Arrow) icon

When you hover over your friend’s chat, you will see this icon, letting you reply to the particular message.


Create a thread (hashtag with comment) icon

When you hover over someone’s chat in a server, you will see this icon; it will let you see a new thread.

The header bar is available at the top in a chat; icons are explained below.

Voice and video call icon

The phone icon will allow you to make voice calls with your friend, and the camera icon will allow you to do a video call with your friend.


Pinned icon

This icon will let you see your pinned messages


Add friends icon

This icon will allow you to create a group chat by adding other friends.


Show profile icon

This icon will show you the user profile of the person you are chatting with.


Inbox icon

This icon will show you all your unread messages from all the servers you follow.


Threads icon

When you are chatting on a server, you will see a few different icons; one of them is the threads icon, allowing you to see all your threads and create new ones.


Show member list icon

This icon will show all the server members, including admins, moderators and bots. You can also see the online and offline status of members from there.

Icons in a Server

When you open a server, you will see various icons; they are explained below.

Down arrowhead icon

This icon will allow you to access a list of server features.


Create an invite (Person with a plus sign) icon

When you hover over a channel or click on it, you will see this icon, allowing you to create an invite for the specific channel.


Create a channel (Plus sign beside server category) icon

If you have your server, you will see this icon beside the sever category. This icon will let you create a new channel in the same category.


Edit channel (Cog) icon

If you have your server, you will only see this icon if you hover over any channel. This icon will allow you to edit the channel settings.


Text and private text channel symbol

If you see a Hashtag symbol beside a channel name, it means it’s a text channel, and if there is a lock on the hashtag symbol, then it means it’s a private text channel, and only the invited people can access it.


Voice and private voice channel symbol

If you see a Volume symbol beside a channel name, it means it’s a voice channel, and if there is a lock on the volume symbol, then it means it’s a private voice channel, and only the invited people can access it.
