Multiplayer games have gotten a lot more immersive over the years and with more and more co-op games coming out, playing along with a friend has never been easier. However, that’s not to say that they’re perfect.

The occasional bugs, glitches and network drop still hamper the player experience. This article discusses the “Elden Ring connection error: returning to your world” issue and gives you 11 fixes to solve the problem.

Restart your router

Restarting your router can help eliminate any unseen network or connectivity issues that you may be facing. You have to turn off your router, wait a bit, and then turn it back on again.

Try ethernet

As convenient as it might be, WiFi can be unstable at times, especially when playing online games. Try using a wired connection between your router and PC or console to see if that solves your problem.

Open the required ports

A lot of games use specific ports to communicate with their respective servers securely. If these ports are blocked on your router, you won’t be able to play online. You need the following ports open to play Elden Ring online properly.

  • UDP: 27015, 27031, 27032, 27033, 27034, 27035, 27036.
  • TCP: 27015, 27036.

Since every router configuration is different, you’ll have to figure out your router settings on your own. We recommend checking the manual or visiting the router manufacturer’s site for instructions on opening ports on your particular router.

Avoid cross-platform multiplayer

Another rather common connection error happens when you’re playing cross-platform. Players have reported a better chance of connecting and playing with their friends if they share the same hardware. So if you’re facing connection issues when playing with a friend, try playing either on console or PC depending on which platform the other player is using to see if that resolves the problem.

Change your DNS settings

Using a different DNS can also help avoid connection errors. There are multiple free DNS providers using whom you can fix this issue. In this example, we’re going to use Google’s DNS.

Disable voice chat

Although the real reason behind this isn’t exactly known, some players have reported that the in-game voice chat function was causing connection problems.

Head over to the game settings and disable voice chat under the Network tab. Keep in mind that this setting is only accessible when you’re in-game and connected online.

Run Steam as an administrator

Running Steam with administrator privileges can help you get around any permission issues that might be hampering the platform’s functionality, especially in regard to online connectivity. Try running Steam as an administrator and launching your game again to see if that fixes the problem.

Reset the summoning system

Elden Rings has an in-built summoning system that helps players invite other players to their games. You can reset the summoning system by using the Furlcalling Finger remedy twice in a row. As soon as the gold-coloured summoning rings get disabled, try summoning your friend again to see if that works.

Use a password

If you’re setting up multiplayer games without passwords, try using one to see if that solves your error. Passwords are generally meant to protect your game against uninvited players, but in this case can force a connection to the server solving your connection problems.

Use another character

As weird as it sounds, sometimes switching characters can also help resolve connection issues. This is a rather unfortunate solution as you’ll lose all progress on your current character and any upgrade or build might cause the connection problems to come back again.

If you’re going to do this, we recommend doing so using the Respec feature in the game, enabled after defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. The feature lets you reset all your stats and start a fresh. However, if you’re really frustrated by Elden Rings’ connection issues, this fix is worth a shot,

Contact support
