Solid state drives (SSD) are faster and more reliable than Hard disk drives (HDD). They are also more energy efficient and improve your computer’s performance.
However, properly using SSDs, you must allocate and partition the drive. Simply speaking, when you allocate SSD, you give a name to the allocated space and assign a file system per your preference.

Method 1: Allocate SSD by using Disk Management
One of the easiest ways to allocate SSD is by using the Disk Management settings in the Control Panel.
Here’s how to use it:
Step 1: Type Disk Management in the taskbar search box and select Create and format hard disk partitions.
Step 2: Here, you will see all the SSD partitions that you currently have on your computer.
Now, right-click on the ‘Unallocated’ drive and then choose New Simple Volume and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Usually, you won’t see this option as, by default, there is no ‘unallocated’ drive. You have to format one drive and leave a substantial storage space.
On the other hand, if you want to create a partition out of the pre-existing drives, you may need to shrink the partition. To do this, right-click on the drive and then select Shrink Volume.
Similarly, if you want to delete the existing drive to create a new partition, click on Delete Volume.

Method 2: Allocate SSD via Settings
Another method to allocate SSD is via the Windows Settings, which you can open by pressing the Windows key + I.
After opening Settings, follow the instructions given below:
Step 1: Now, head to System > Storage.
Step 2: Click Advanced storage settings and select Disk and volumes. Here, you will see a list of all the disks connected to your computer.
Now, select the’ Unallocated’ option and click Create Volume. You will have to delete the drive if you see no ‘Unallocated’ option. To delete the drive, click Properties and select Delete under the Format section.
Once you delete the drive, you’ll see the ‘Unallocated’ option. After you’ve clicked on the Create Volume button, decide the drive’s label, drive letter, partition size and the file system you want to adopt for this newly created drive.
After you’re done, head to Advanced > Perform a quick format > Format to format the partition and create a new drive.

Method 3: Allocate SSD via Windows 11 setup
The third way to allocate SSD in Windows 11 is via the Windows 11 setup. When installing the Windows, you are given the option to partition the SSD.
- Select the Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) option when prompted. Next, delete all the partitions by selecting each partition and clicking Delete.
- Now, select ‘Drive 0’ and click the New option below. Fix the storage space and then select Apply. ‘Drive 0’ is the drive where the Windows will be installed. Usually, this is the ‘C’ drive in most computers.
- Windows will create additional partitions along with ‘Drive 0’. You can click on New to create more partitions as per your wish.
