Activision has been making great Call of Duty games back to back for a while now. The Modern Warfare series is perhaps one of the most played games in the entire Call of Duty lineup, thanks to their engaging multiplayer gameplay.

That said, the game still isn’t immune to random bugs and glitches, and Modern Warfare 2 is no exception to that. In this article, we’re talking about the travis-rilea error in Modern Warfare 2, its causes and what you can do to fix the problem.

What causes the travis-rilea error?

The error is mostly caused by connection issues between the game and its Activision servers. Common causes include:

  • Internet connectivity issues.
  • Firewall or NAT settings.
  • Server outage.

How to fix this?

You can try out the following six fixes.

Restart your router

Restarting your router can help eliminate any unseen network or connectivity issues you may face. You have to turn off your router, wait a bit, and then turn it back on again.

Restart your game

One of the easiest ways to fix the problem is to restart the game. Restarting games and programs often resolves temporary bugs that can cause crashes or connectivity issues. Once the game is stopped completely (you can verify this using the Task Manager), relaunch it using the Steam or Battle Net launcher, and it should work just fine.

Change NAT type

If your router has a NAT type 3, otherwise called strict, you will run into problems with a game, as strict NAT types often block internet traffic to non-essential programs. If you have admin access to your network, try changing the NAT type to see if that resolves your error.

Check out our detailed guide on how to change NAT type on consoles here.

Disable VPN

If you’re using a VPN while gaming, some games can experience issues due to geo-restricted content policies. Disable it and try rerunning the game if you’re on a VPN. It should work just fine. The same goes for any firewalls you might have as well.

Check Firewall

Sometimes the Windows Firewall can get in the way of programs trying to access the internet, which can very well be the case here. Try temporarily disabling your firewall to see if Modern Warfare starts working properly.

Check for server outages

Last but not least, check for any server outages on the game’s end. You can check Activision’s Online Services page or a third-party site like DownDetector to verify if the game servers are running fine. If they aren’t, there isn’t much you can do except wait.
