How to add or remove hyperlinks in Microsoft Word?

Microsoft Word is one of the most used productivity tools. It makes life easier by helping you create text documents, reports, editing pdf, and many more essential documents.

While working on text documents, we all have encountered situations in which you need to insert links to the file. Unsurprisingly, Word has the option of adding hyperlinks to your text. Multiple objects can be linked in a Word document such as a webpage, a bookmark in the same document, a new document or an e-mail address.

Here we’ve explained how you can hyperlink in Word for PC and Word smartphone app and also how you can remove the hyperlink.

How to add a Hyperlink in Word for PC?

As mentioned above, you can hyperlink a webpage, a bookmark in the same document, a new document or an e-mail address in your Word document on PC. Follow these steps to create hyperlinks in your document.

Hyperlinking a webpage in Word

Step 1: Highlight the text which you want to hyperlink and right-click to open the quick-edit toolbar. Then click on the Link option. You can also select the Link option on the side menu.This is an image of hyperlink 1 Step 2: Click on the Existing File or Webpage option on the left of the window. If you want to link a file, select the file through the file explorer window and if you are linking a webpage, insert the URL of the webpage in the Address bar at the bottom of the window. Click on the Ok button to create a hyperlink.

Hyperlinking a bookmark in Word

Step 1: Highlight the text which you want to hyperlink. Hyperlinking a new document in Word

The first two steps are like how you will hyperlink a bookmark or webpage. After opening the Link window (you can also use the keyboard shortcut mentioned above), follow the steps given below.

Select the address where the new file will be created. Select the Edit the new Document now option if you want to edit the document right after clicking on the hyperlink or you can select to Edit the new document later. Then click on the Ok button. Hyperlinking an e-mail address in Word

The first two steps are like how you will hyperlink a bookmark, webpage or document. After opening the Link window (you can also use the keyboard shortcut mentioned above), follow the steps given below.

The hyperlink will open a new e-mail ready to be sent to the address you inserted from the default e-mail id on the browser.

How to add Hyperlinks in the Microsoft Word app?

Unlike the myriad linking options available in Word for PC, you can only attach a URL in the Microsoft Word mobile application. Follow the steps below to hyperlink in Word app.

  • Highlight the text that you want to hyperlink.
  • Open the menu by clicking on the triangle at the bottom-right of the screen.
  • Click on the drop-down list of tabs to open all tabs in Word. Select the Insert from the drop-down list.
  • Select the Link option and click on Insert Link.
  • Enter the URL in the address text field and click on Insert.

How to remove a hyperlink in Word on PC?

Removing a hyperlink is an effortless task involving just three steps on a PC. Follow these steps to remove a hyperlink.

  • Select or highlight the text from which you want to move a hyperlink.
  • Right-click on the text.
  • Click on the Remove Hyperlink option on the menu. The hyperlink will be removed from the document.

How to remove a hyperlink in Word app?

For removing a hyperlink in the Word app on phone, follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Click on the hyperlink you want to remove.
  • Then click on the Remove Hyperlink option from the pop-up options and the hyperlink will be removed.
