Microsoft Word offers users a tool to track the edits being made to a document, which can be useful for writers, editors, professors and students to clearly present the changes. In this guide, you’ll find how to turn on track changes in Word on PC and Android app, as well as how to turn them off, remove track changes and lock track changes with a password so that any other contributor on the document can’t remove them.
How to track changes in Word for PC?
On the toolbar at the top, click on Review and then from the options below it, click on Track Changes. Your document will now start tracking changes as you edit. To disable track changes, click on the Track Changes option again.

How to track changes in Word for Android?
Track changes aren’t limited to Microsoft Word for PC but can be turned on and off via the smartphone app too. Follow the steps below to track changes in Word app for Android.
- In the document editor, tap on the upward-arrow icon at the bottom-right of the display to open the toolbar.
- Tap on Home at the top-left of the toolbar.
- From the menu, tap on Review.
- Then scroll down in the Review toolbar and tap on Track Changes.
You can turn off track changes in Word by following the same steps and tapping on the Track Changes option again.
How to lock track changes in Word?
If you’re working on a multi-author document or are going to share it with someone else but don’t want them to turn off track changes, you can password-protect the settings. This means that if you or anyone working on the documents wants to turn off track changes, they’ll need to know the password to disable the setting.
You can only password-protect track changes in Word for PC. To lock track changes in Word by password-protecting it, follow the steps mentioned below.
Step 1: On the toolbar at the top click on Review and then from the options below it, click on the arrow beside Track Changes. Select Lock Tracking option from the dropdown menu. Step 2: A dialogue box will appear on the document. Enter the password in the first box; then re-enter it in the one below and click on the OK button. How to remove track changes in Word for PC?
To remove track changes in Word app for PC, right-click on the edit that you want to delete and then from the menu select Reject Deletion. You might need to adjust the formatting of the document — getting rid of the strikethrough in our case — after rejecting the track change.
If you wish to accept the track change in Word, select the Accept Deletion option from the menu instead of Reject Deletion.
How to remove track changes in Word for Android?
To remove track changes in Word app for Android, tap on the edit that you want to delete. Options will appear at the bottom of the display. Tap on the folder icon with a cross (delete) sign. If here is a formatting — strikethrough in our case — the app will still show the delete icon; tap on it to remove formatting (refer to the screenshot below). If you want to accept the track changes, tap on the folder icon with a tick mark (located to the left of the reject formatting icon).
