Microsoft Word needs no introduction. It is one of the widely used services in the Microsoft Office package. Word has helped all of us in compiling our homework as well as making and editing our resumes.

Find word count of the entire document in Microsoft Word (PC)
Counting words in Microsoft Word is easy. Just write the text, and it will show you the number of words at the bottom left of the status bar. Che
Make sure that you have turned on the word count option first. Look at the screenshot below. In the screenshot, the word count option is, by default, on. As you can see, the text has 744 words and 3975 characters.
Similarly, if you want a more detailed report, click on the point where the word count is mentioned and then check the detailed report. Here is a screenshot for the same. As you can see, the complete report indicates the page count, word count, characters (both with space and without) alongwith paragraph and lines.
This direct method works in Microsoft Word 2007, Word 2013, Word 2016, Word Starter 2010, World 2016 for Mac, Word 2019 for Mac, Word for Office 365, Word for Office 365 for Mac, Word for the web and Word 2019.
For Word 2003, this method is not useful. Microsoft ended the support for its Office 2003 in 2014. So, it would be better if you upgrade to any of the newer versions that are available.
How to find word count in a part of the text?
Similarly, you can select a portion of the text, and the word count of that part will be visible on the status bar. To select a piece of the text, press Shift key and then tap the arrow keys or highlight via your mouse. Find word count in Microsoft Word app (Android and iOS)
In case, you are using the Microsoft Word app, here are the steps to count the words.
- Open Microsoft Word and then type or copy your text.
- When you are done, tap on the Edit option at the top. Check out the first screenshot to get a better idea. The icon looks like an inverted pen with A written on it.
- Next, tap on the Home button.
- From the Home menu, select the Review option.
- In the Review subheading, tap on Word Count.
Now, you can see a detailed report about the number of words along with page count and characters.
